China Travel Answer

Q: I'm currently in Wenzhou. I plan to travel to Beijing specifically to the great wall. Can you please advice me the cheapest way to get there by train or by bus. I think trains are more convenient. However, please do advice also regarding air travel. How long does it take/the cost/the specific stop overs. Kindly advice on back and forth travel info Wenzhou/Beijing/Wenzhou. Many Thanks & Best Regards.

You can travel by train from Wenzhou to Beijing. This is not a very fast train, which makes many stops on the way. It is going to be therefore a long train ride - over 27 hours to cover 2,000 km (1,250 ml). For sure you need to get a sleeping berth for this trip.

You can fly from Wenzhou to Beijing (Yongqiang Airport to Beijing Capital Airport). Flight time is two hours and thirty minutes. Depending on when you travel and when you book, you may get your plane ticket for 800-1,200 Chinese dollars. It is cheaper to travel by train; you can probably get a soft sleeping berth on that train for 600-700 Chinese dollars.

One can also take a long distance bus to get from Wenzhou to Beijing, for a little less than a soft sleeping berth on a train, but again it is going to a rather long bus ride.

Once you're in Beijing, you can either tour the Great Wall in a guided group or just on your own (if you're confident that you can find your way around and everything). There are three stretches of the Great Wall that you can go to. From cloest to the farthest (also from the most toured to less crowded), they're Badaling, Mutianyu and Simatai.

On your way back from Beijing to Wenzhou, you can travel the same you came or try another means of transportation.

In any event, if you want to do this on your own, you need to plan your trip well. For instance, it may not be easy for you to get the train ticket you need. You do not want to get stuck somewhere for this kind of reasons or miss what you have gone out to see.
