China Travel Answer

Q: I wanted to catch a train from Kowloon to Shanghai. I understand that this train only travels every 'other' day. Could you please advise when this train leaves Kowloon on odd or even days. Thank you.

One can travel by train from Hong Kong to Shanghai or Beijing. The through train departs from the Hung Hom station in Kowloon (Kowloon is part of greater Hong Kong).

The train from Kowloon runs to Shanghai and Beijing on alternate days. In other words, if a train travels to Beijing on one day, it journeys to Shanghai the following day; on the third day, it is back to Bejing, so on and so forth.

Below is a train schedule for the months from March to October 2008:

March 08: Even days to Beijing, odd days to Shanghai

April/May 08: Odd days to Beijing, even days to Shanghai

June/July 08: Even days to Beijing, odd days to Shanghai

August 08: Odd days to Beijing, even days to Shanghai

September/October 08: Evendays to Beijing, odd days to Shanghai

Train ride time from Kowloon to Beijing is approximately 24 hours while the train traveling time from Kowloon to Shanghai is about 20 hours.

The return trains depart from Beijing and Shanghai for Kowloon on the day there is a train arriving from Kowloon. Suppose a train departs from Kowloon for Shanghai on an even day. On the odd day there will be a train departing from Shanghai for Kowloon. Same with Beijing.
