Transport fr Shanghai Airport to Nantong
Q: Kindly advise on the transport from Shanghai Airport to Nantong? Direct coach service, is there any? And how much? How far the distance between the two, roughly and how long the trip? Has the Sutong Yangtze River Bridge open to public transport all the way to Nantong? Read it would cut down travel time to only 1 hr.
There are two major airports that serve Shanghai. One is Pudong International Airport and the other is Hongqiao Airport. Most international flights arrive at and take off from Pudong Airport while domestic flights utilize Hongqiao Airport. There are, however, many exceptions. So first you need to make sure which of the two airports you'll be at.
We're not aware of long distance coaches that go directly from the airports to Nantong. There are buses that depart from the airports and are bound for cities outside Shanghai, but there do not seem to be such services to Nantong. Don't know if the recent opening of Sutong Bridge over Yangzi River has changed this.
You'll certainly find buses that do go to Nantong at Shanghai Passenger Bus General Station (Shanghai Qiche Keyun Zong Zhan), which is located in the city, next to Shanghai Railway Station. From Pudong Airport you can take Airport Shuttle Bus Line 5 to get to Shanghai Railway Station and you'll find the General Bus Station nearby.
Buses bound for Nantong depart from other bus stations in Shanghai too, but the General Bus Station is the best-known long distance bus station.
It used to take about 4 hours for buses from Shanghai to reach Nantong. Sutong Bridge that spans Yangzi River was recently opened for public use (starting May 25, 2008), and transportation time between Shanghai and Nantong has been reduced to no more than 3 hours.
In contrast, if you take a train to go from Shanghai to Nantong, it takes you over 7 hours to make the trip. And you arrive at night (about 10:30 pm).
Bus fare from Shanghai to Nantong is about 60 Chinese dollars. To hire for yourself a taxi to go from Shanghai to Nantong, it takes about 400 Chinese dollars. This would involve some negotiation, however, since normally cabs do not make such long distance trips. Better not do this unless you have some local people to assist you.
