Train from Guangzhou East to Hung Hom
Q: We are taking a flight from Huangyan to Guangzhou and then travel by train to HK. (T803 departs 1317) I note on the MTR website they say e-tickets must be picked up in HK? Can we purchase a ticket when we arrive by taxi at the Guangzhou East train station? How long before the train departs do we have to purchase a ticket?
Hong Kong MTR states: "... only Guangdong line tickets are available for sale by tele-ticketing / e-Ticketing Services. All train tickets purchased through the e-Ticketing Services must be collected in Hong Kong." Does this mean that if you purchase your tickets by telephone, you do not have to collect your tickets in Hong Kong? You may want to call their Tele-ticketing and Enquiry Hotline, (852) 2947 7888, for further information.
Anyway, it shouldn't be difficult for you to get your tickets at Guangzhou East. Trains depart every hour for Hong Kong during the day. MTR advises passengers to arrive 45 minutes before a train's departure time. Gate closes 10 minutes before train departure. Tickets for the Canton-Kowloon can be purchased 20 days or so in advance (for domestic trains, the period has been shortened from 10 days to five days due to the Olympic Games currently under way).
If somehow you cannot travel by train, you can take advantage of coach services that link Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Among the companies that provide such services are China Travel Tours Transportation Development H.K. (tel.: 852 2764 9803), Eternal East Cross-Border Coach Management (tel.: 852 2261 0176), and Trans-island Limousine Service (tel.: 852 2261 0296).
