Local travel and GPS
Q: Would a hand-held GPS be of help in short distance travel when walking or traveling by a rental vehicle?
Some drivers and travelers in China do use GPS. The signal comes from the same satellites that provide GPS service to the United States. China is developing a global positioning system of its own, but it is not deployed yet. Precision ranges from 5 to 10 meters, depending on the particulars (rural or urban environemnt and so on). Many cellphones have GPS function. Among some of GPS products sold in China are Nokia N810 (¥3980), Garmin 200W (¥2650), Magellan Explorist 500 (¥1800) and numerous other offerings.
