Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is located in the northwestern corner of Hunan Province. It is roughly 1,800 km from Shanghai. To go from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie, you can either fly or travel by train. There is a direct train to Zhangjiajie that departs from Shanghai Nan Zhan (Shanghai Southern Station). It leaves at noon time and arrives in Zhangjiajie early in the morning. Train ride time is about 20 hours. Get a sleeping berth. On its way back, the train departs at 1:00 in the afternoon and arrive in Shanghai the next morning.
There are flights from Shanghai Pudong Airport to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, operated by Shanghai Airline and Shandong Airline. Flight time is two hours.
Phoenix Old Town (Fenghuang Gucheng) is southwest of Zhangjiajie. By bus, travel time is 4 to 5 hours. It is a small place known for its traditional architecture.
