 Taking a Picture in Front of the Great Hall of the People

Located in the heart of Beijing, the Great Hall of the Peoople houses China's National People's Congress. Sitting on the western side of the Tiananmen Square, the Great Hall was constructed in 1959. The building measures 336 m (1,102 ft) in length, 206 m (676 ft) in width, and 46 m (151 ft) in height. The building contains a large conference hall that seats over 10,000 people and a banquet hall that can serve 5,000 guests at one time. In the hall there are also meeting rooms named after China's cities, provinces and regions, such as Beijing Hall, Shanghai Hall, Taiwan Hall, Hong Kong Hall, etc. These conference halls are decorated with appropriate regional themes and flavors and feature artworks from the respestive localities. For example, Beijing Hall, which is 548 sq. m (5,899 sq. ft) in area, is decorated with paintings and sculptures presenting the Great Wall and the Forbbiden City. Hunan Hall, for its part, showcases artworks that portray subjects such as as the Dongting Lake. These conference rooms are also meeting places for provincial delegates to the National People's Congress.
