The Memorial for People's Heroes at Tian'anmen Square
Located at the center of the Tiananmen Square, the Memorial for People's Heroes was erected when the People's Republic of China was founded. The monument is in rememberance of those who died in the wars from the middle of the 19th century to 1949. The inscription on the monument is in Mao Zedong's handwriting, reading "Glorious immortality to the people's heroes." The building seen behind the monument is the Memorial Hall for Chairman Mao, built after Mao's death in 1976. Mao still lies in the the building today.
