Looking North from inside the Forbidden City

North of the Tiananmen Square is the Imperial Forbidden City. North of the Imperial Forbbiden City is Jingshan Park. Jingshan means "Hill with a Scenic View." Standing atop this hill, one can have a good look at Beijing as a whole. This was particularly true back in the old days when the city was relatively small, when buildings were low, and when air quality was better. Today, the old architecture in central Beijing (the area around the Forbidden City and the Jingshan Park) is well kept, but skyscrapers have risen up in the outlying areas of the city, which creates a sharp contrast between what is old and what is new.

Jingshan Park used to be reserved for China's imperial family. Now it is open to the public.
