The scuplture shows a street scene dating back to the Qing Dynasty. This can be seen in the hair-style of the two men portrayed here. The front half of their heads are shaved, with the remaining hair woven into a queue hanging in the back. This was required of the people in China after the Manchu conquest in the middle of the 17th century. The custom survived into the early 20th century, when the Qing Dynasty was overthrown and the Republic of China was founded.
