Travel to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tiazhou, Wenzhou, Yiwu and Shanghai

Q: I intend to travel following places on a business trip: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tiazhou, Wenzhou, Yiwu, Shanghai and back to Delhi, India. Suggest the most suitable mode & route to travel. Also Please inform: 1)Time taken? 2)How much does it cost? Thanks!

By "Tiazhou" you probably mean "Taizhou", the city located in Zhejiang Province, on the coast, south of the Yangzi River. There is also a Taizhou in Jiangsu Province, which is located north of the Yangzi River. Most foreign business people seem to be traveling to Taizhou in Zhejiang Province since it is rather active in the production of exported goods.

Shenzhen is about an hour's trip south of Guangzhou, by train or bus. If you arrive at Hong Kong International Airport, you will travel through Shenzhen first on your way to Guangzhou, Shenzhen being forty minutes or so north of Hong Kong. If you arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, you can still get to Shenzhen easily, by train or bus. Cost for travel between the two cities is minimum.

The other cities are quite some distance north of Guangzhou and Shenzhen. For instance, the distance between Guangzhou and Wenzhou, by railway, is 1,670 km; train ride time is about 23 hours. There are two direct train services from Guangzhou to Wenzhou. Both depart before noon and arrive the next morning. If you go with a soft-sleeping berth, the cost is about 550 Chinese dollars.

There are flight services between Guangzhou and Wenzhou and between Shenzhen and Wenzhou. Fares vary depending how you book, but the cost is roughly comparable to traveling by train in a soft-sleeping berth. Flight time is about an hour and half. There are also flight services between Guangzhou and Yiwu.

If you do not mind the long hours on a bus, you can also travel by long distance bus from Guangzhou to Wenzhou or Yiwu. Bus travel time from Guangzhou to Wenzhou is about 15 hours; cost is 300 dollars or so. Given the distance, bus does not seem to be as safe or comfortable a way to travel as train or plane. There are buses with sleeping berths.

Taizhou is about 100 km northesast of Wenzhou and Yiwu is about 200 km northwest of Wenzhou. So, one way to do this is to travel from Guangzhou to Wenzhou first, by plane, train or bus, and then travel from Wenzhou to Taizhou and Yiwu, by bus. You can also travel from Guangzhou to Yiwu first, by train or plane (there are air links between Guangzhou and Yiwu). By railway, the distance is about 1,470 km between Guangzhou and Yiwu; train ride time is 16 to 17 hours (in fact, your Wenzhou-bound train from Guangzhou will get as close as 50 km from Yiwu and then turns east to go to Wenzhou). From Yiwu you can then travel by long distance bus to Wenzhou and Taizhou. There are also flight services between Guangzhou and Yiwu. Bus rides among Wenzhou, Taizhou and Yiwu should last no more than 3 hours.

After you are done with Wenzhou, Taizhou and Yiwu, you can then move on to Shanghai, which is about 300 km northeast of Yiwu. You can travel by train or bus from Yiwu to Shanghai and then fly back from Shanghai to Guangzhou or directly return to your home country.

You can, of course, also use Shanghai as a base. Fly to Shanghai first, visit Yiwu, Taizhou and Wenzhou, and then move on to Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

They have been building a new freeway between Beijing and Qingdao. This is a short cut. In the past, those who travel by bus or car from Beijing to Qingdao first follow the freeway to Jinan and then turn east at Jinan to go on to Qingdao. With the new highway, travelers can turn east toward Qingdao before they reach Jinan and thus shortens the distance between Beijing and Qingdao. Don't know, however, if this freeway is finished yet or not, nor how much shorter the trip becomes with this new road.
