Transportation to Meizhou
Q: I would like to visit Meizhou next month. Is there any train in the morning from Shenzhen to Meizhou? If I take a bus from Shenzhen to there, is the journey safe? Thank you.
You can take long distance buses to go from Shenzhen to Meizhou. It should be safe to do so. The distance between the two cities is approximately 450 km. Travel time is 5 to 6 hours. Bus fare, depending on the quality of the bus you take, ranges from ¥80 to ¥130. You should be able to find these buses at a number of long distance bus terminals - for example, Futian Bus Station, Qiaoshe Bus Station, or Yinhu Bus Station. There should be several departures everyday, from early morning through afternoon. Futian Bus Station is located at 8001 Shen Nan Da Dao, where the avenue intersect with Guangzhou-Shenzhen Free Way; tel.: (0755) 8323-7655. Qiaoshe (Overseas Chinese Association) Bus Station is located close to Shenzhen Railway Station and the Luo Hu Border cross with Hong Kong; tel.: (755) 89810409. Yinhu Bus Station is located on Bei Huan Da Dao (Northern Belt Way); tel.: (755) 8243-6053.
Two trains depart from Shenzhen for Meizhou on a daily basis. Train ride time between the two cities is 5 to 6 hours. One of the trains leaves in the afternoon and arrives about 8:00 pm. The other train leaves in the evening and arrive past midnight. A soft-seat ticket costs about ¥100. A soft-sleeping-berth ticket costs about ¥175.
If you arrive in Meizhou late at night, you need to think about local transportation/accommodation upon arrival. Taxi rates in Meizhou are ¥5.00 (or ¥4.00 for a smaller cab) for the first 2 km; then ¥1.8 for each additional km. It matters where your final destination is in Meizhou. You may have to take another bus if the place you're going to is far away from Meizhou Railway is station, and that cannot be done at night. Meizhou City refers to a prefecture that consists of several counties and county-level districts. Meijiang District is where Meizhou government is located. There is Meixian (Mei County) which now is actually an urban district of Meizhou. In addition to these two districts, there are five counties plus a county-level city under the administration of Meizhou. The total area of Meizhou is 15,899 square km, with a total population of 4 million.
