China Readies for 2013 Spring Festival Travel Rush
Authorities in China have identified a 40-day period from late Janurary to early March in which special measures will be taken to facilitate the travel related to the 2013 Spring Festival.
Every year, hundreds of millions of Chinese get on the road to join their families for the Spring Festival, which is the traditional lunar new year and the important holiday out of a year for the Chinese. For 2013, the big date is Februrary 10. Traffic will be heavy before and after the holiday, and among measures taken to speed up people's movement include expanded transportation services by land, air, and river.
Authorities estimate during the 40-day Spring Festival transportation period, about 3.4 billion travelers will be on the move one way or another. This will mark an 8.6% increase over the traffic seen for the 2012 Spring Festival.
