Bell Tower and Drum Tower in Xian Temporarily Closed to Tourists for Maintenance

The Bell Tower and Drum Tower of Xi’an are currently off limit to tourists. The towers, which make a favorite stop for those who tour Xi’an, are currently going through three-month long protective repairs. The buildings are scheduled to reopen on February 2013.

The twin towers, located in the heart of Xi’an, were originally built in the 14th century. In the old days, the bell was used to signal the beginning of the day and drum, the arrival of the evening. They also played important ceremonial roles on important occasions.

The current maintenance project will focus on the roofs and wooden structures of the 600-year old buildings.
