80 Million Passengers Travel through Beijing Capital Airport in 2012

By the end of 2012, the annual number of passengers traveling through the Beijing Capital International Airport will have surpassed the 80 million mark. As of November 6, a total of 69.8 million travelers have flown in and out of Beijing Capital, which now stands as the world’s second busiest airport, trailing only the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport of Atlanta, US.

Currently, Beijing Capital maintains air links to 214 airports around the globe, serving 1,500 flights and a quarter of a million passengers on a daily basis.

In the past five years Beijing Capital has seen a rapid increase in the number of passengers it served, from 50 million in 2007 to 70 million in 2010. The 2008 addition of a new terminal, Terminal Number 3, significantly expanded the airport’s service capacity.

Already, however, demand is outstripping what airport facilities can offer, and a plan to build yet another new airport for Beijing is under planning. Currently Beijing has two commercial airports, Beijing Capital International and the smaller Beijing Nanyuan Airport, which hosts domestic flights only.
